Mickey Rourke makes a stunning return to form; earning every inch of his Golden Globe for Best Actor in this gritty, heart wrenching story of professional wrestling's darkest side.
The story sees Rourke take on the role of Randy 'The Ram' Robinson, an ageing pro wrestler whose glory days are far behind him.
Craving the spotlight, the roar of the crowd and, of course, a pay cheque, Robinson is reduced to performing in front of dwindling crowds on wrestling's fringe circuit, all the while trying to reconcile with his estranged daughter and hold down a job at a local shop.
It's a unique, engrossing tale of a former star fallen on hard times that transcends the world of wrestling and relates to a whole plethora of entertainers struggling to come to terms with the end of their proverbial fifteen minutes.
But it's more than just the story that makes The Wrestler work on so many levels.
Rourke, whose real life parallels with 'The Ram' have been well-documented, is so engaging and believable in his role you'd be forgiven for thinking the part was written specifically for him; bringing Randy Robinson to life with breathtaking results.
As do the film's supporting cast.
Former World Championship Wrestling star, Earnest 'The Cat' Miller works wonders with his role as The Ram's arch rival, The Ayatollah, whilst Marisa Tomei provides further depth to the tale as a stripper who, much like Randy Robinson, knows no other way of living than the one she has.
As the cast perform their parts with aplomb, the production also lends itself nigh on perfectly to its subject; gritty, unpolished, stark and unforgiving, the whole package comes together to create a tragic tale with gut-wrenching realism. And whilst fans of professional wrestling will probably get a kick out of seeing indie circuit favourites from cult promotions, Ring of Honor and Combat Zone Wrestling, up on the big screen, The Wrestler really appeals to a wider audience than just those who get their jollies from watching sweaty men in spandex grapple with each other.
This is a film about isolation and belonging, love and tragedy and everything that goes with it. Strip away the pro wrestling element and what you're essentially left with is a touching insight into the human condition.
The Wrestler isn't just the best film ever made about professional wrestling, it's the best film made in a very long time.
