Things to do in Sydney, Australia during the spring

by Gail Kavanagh

Created on: April 13, 2009

One of the first things visitors from the northern Hemisphere should do is time their arrival in Sydney during the months of September, October and November. If you arrive in the Northern spring you will be looking for things to do in fall. Spring is the perfect time to enjoy all of Sydney's pleasures. Later on, when summer comes, the heat of the city can be quite intense.

The City of Sydney Spring Cycle is a big event that takes place in and around the city, when thousands of bike riders take to the streets and pedal for charity. You can join in by hiring a bike at Sydney Olympic Park for $15 AUD, which includes the mandatory helmet. In 2009 the bike ride takes place on September 27, but need to book ahead to take part. Check all the details at the website.

If a leisurely stroll is more your line, Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens are particularly beautiful in spring when plants from all over the world are a blaze of glory. The gardens overlook Sydney Harbour, and most of the spectacular sights of Sydney, such as the Opera House, and the Harbour Bridge. Take a free guided tour of the gardens in the morning or at lunchtime, or pay for fascinating Aboriginal Heritage Tour and discover the gardens' Aboriginal heritage and lore. The tour includes traditional music and dance and includes a taste of Aboriginal bush tucker (that's wild food, to the uninitiated).

The way most Sydneysiders celebrate spring in the gardens is simply to take a picnic lunch and relax under the trees. The gardens have many beautiful picnic spots, some overlooking the sparkling waters of the Harbour, as well as restaurants and cafes.

Another beautiful garden to enjoy in spring is the Chinese Garden of Friendship in Darling Harbour. This beautiful enclosed garden is a haven from the bustle of the city, and you can enjoy Chinese tea and cakes overlooking the lake. Created by garden designers from Sydney's sister city of Guangzhou in China, the gardens are a serene and peaceful gift of friendship to the city.

Bondi Beach is an iconic Australian destination and in September it plays host to the Festival of the Winds, with kite makers and fliers from all over the world filling the skies with kites of all shapes and sizes. You can join in by buying a kite at one of the many stalls, or just find a vantage point and enjoy the spectacle. The program includes plenty of multicultural entertainment as well as kite making workshops. All the details are at the Festival of the Winds website.

Darling Harbour, one of Sydney's most popular attractions, comes alive to the sound of Latin American music in October when the Darling Harbour Fiesta takes off. Performers from all over Australia and around the world show off their sexy moves to the irresistible beat of Latin music. It is one of the most exciting times of the year to visit Darling Harbour, which already offers great shopping, a relaxing park and street performers all year round.

As you can see, spring is a vibrant season in Sydney. Some events occur year after year, but every spring there is something new to do and see. Check out Sydney tourism websites before your visit and plan to be there when the city is having a party.
