Reflections: Perfect marriage

by Heidi Hauptly

Created on: April 12, 2009

If you were little girl growing up you probably in some form or another idolized Cinderella. You might even have dreamed about your perfect wedding and how it would all work out. The great big fancy wedding dress with the big head piece to the prince charming and the huge cake. That is only one small piece of the cake. The wedding is not the marriage. Marriage is a life long commitment that the couple makes while standing on the platform before all their friends and family.

In this day and age people get married and divorced like they sometimes eat a meal. It is eaten all too fast and then soon forgotten. The same can be said for marriages today as well. What makes the perfect marriage? I think what I should have asked is what makes a marriage last? Making a marriage perfect in this day and age is making a marriage last. For a marriage to last there has to be a lot of things to consider. The couple has to come together when faced with a problem and discuss it together and work as a team to make a good decision. Sometimes the decision is rather large and one part makes a decision and this does not appeal to the other person which in turn makes for a fight.

You do have to pick and choose your battles. I have found in being married to my husband for the last almost eight years that I have had to really think if something I want to discuss is worth it because it could cause a fight. I start to think to myself is it really worth the fight or can I avoid the fight by just keeping my mouth quiet? A lot of people think that it's perfectly ok for one of the partners to go out with the same sex just as friends. When this happens it usually can lead to affairs and a whole lot of other problems that can be unavoided by simply going out as a couple. I have learned that there can be no secrets in a relationship. A truly good marriage works when they can tell anything to their partner.

I have watched my grandparents as they have been married over fifty years and learned a thing or two about a long, lasting marriage. Laughter is a huge key component in keeping things interesting in a relationship. They nit pick in a funny and playful way even today and find themselves laughing the whole time. Working all things out no matter what the circumstances are that lie ahead of them. They always talk. They always forgive when one of them messes up and they move on. They always communicate and never even think of having an affair. Today when people have problems instead of working them
