Firstly, I want to emphasize the fact that this top is strictly my own opinion, based on my own liking of those films. I do not claim that #2 is a better film than #8, for example, only that I like it better.
#10: Beetlejuice (1988)
This ironic Burton comedy is the typical example of dark humour. Michael Keaton plays the role of the "ghost with the most" on a Harry Belafonte soundtrack and the combo actually works. It's got great jokes and a wonderful setting (surprisingly well-crafted on such a low budget) that carries you in a perfectly Burtonesque world. Cast also includes: Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder.
#9: Barry Lyndon (1985)
A very atypical film for Stanley Kubrick, but I must admit, a friend of mine had a theory about this film that I find worth mentioning: "It's a typical Kubrick movie only because it's so atypical of the genre." Truly, I have never met a similar view of that period (the 18th century). Carried through the war front and upper English society, the film makes a history worth watching.
#8: Boogie Nights (1997)
Director Paul Thomas Anderson brings a taboo subject into attention, the rise of a porn star to fame and generally an overlook of the porn industry. Mark Wahlberg plays Dirk Diggler, a symbol of the manhood that all women desire. He becomes rich and famous, but as all American dreams go, his fame is to vanish quickly, similar to "Goodfellas". Worth watching for not being an average film subject.
#7: Being John Malkovich (1999)
A fantastic film script with one of the most bizarre stories ever. Spike Jonze creates the image of hundreds of Malkoviches in the very same room, mix-up caused by the actor himself going through the portal that makes it possible for you to see the world through his eyes. Didn't understand a thing? Watch it.
#6: Blowup (1966)
This movie by Michelangelo Antonioni can truly be considered art. The story isn't much; it's basically just a photographer's guess. What makes it so purely phenomenal is how the story is told: fascinating characters and odd scenography. Warning: it's a little hard to follow for the average movie watcher.
#5: Bitter Moon (1992)
Nigel and Oscar are both strongly infatuated with a complete seductress, Mimi. Roman Polanski tells the story in the most sick, perverted and twisted way possible, with no easing in or compromises. The story is split in half: Nigel's pathetic attempts to woo Mimi and Oscar's tales of the passionate sexual games in which he used to engage with Mimi. Certainly not a film
