From the beauty of the blue-eyed Persian to the unique and oddly appearing Sphynx, "Cat Breeds of the World" gives cat enthusiast an in-depth look at the different feline breeds. Authored by Desmond Morris, this informative guide has over 250 pages of cat breeds, photographs of the breeds, and detailed information concerning their history and characteristics.
The introduction of this extensive cat book begins with the history of the cat, genetics, anatomy, and terminology associated with the feline world. Mr. Morris goes into detail about the basic formation of cats especially with the anatomy. He also explains some common terms such as "Rex" cats that a novice cat owner may not fully know the meaning.
Following the authors introduction, the book begins to discuss the distinctive breeds. Over 75 different breeds are discussed, from the common Siamese to the almost unheard of Nebelung. Each feline breed includes a comprehensive look at the history of the breed and if known, goes back to the breed's first beginnings. The wonderfully written stories about these magnificent cats are quite enjoyable to study and readers will gain a wealth of knowledge from Mr. Morris' research. He also includes some of the tales and legends behind certain breeds and fully discloses if they are myths, truths, or "could be" accounts of the breed's past.
The professional photographs of each breed stands out in this book. These impressive views of the different breeds are pleasing to the eye and cat enthusiasts will enjoy this book simply for the pictures. One of the most striking pictures is that of the Coupari (long-haired version of the Scottish Fold), that one could purely understand this breed simply from the photograph is remarkable.
Along with the history, Mr. Morris describes each breed's personality, color traits, and clubs and organizations dedicated to that breed. The book closes with some descriptions of experimental breeds (the book does not include pictures of these cats), an extensive explanation of coat colors and patterns, and the different cat societies found across the globe.
"Cat Breeds of the World" doesn't cover cat ownership, health and care issues, and isn't a manual for purchasing cats but covers exactly as the title describes. This book is a treasure for cat enthusiasts, breeders, and those interested in researching the different breeds and their histories. Desmond Morris was the Curator of Mammals at the London Zoo where he cared for the "largest collection of wild felines in the world" and his love for these animals is evident in his writing of "Cat Breeds of the World". The author has written over 30 books which also include "Catworld", "Catwatching", and "Catlore", all of which are a delight to read.
