Poetry: Fortunes

by Haley Johnston

Created on: April 11, 2009

The fortune-

I got myself a fortune with my meal just yesterday,

when I read it I felt cheated, and I left the small cafe.

It said I have no fortune, what's to come is up to me,

through my choices and my actions comes my future destiny.

and those numbers labeled "lucky" mocked me as i read the back.

The randomness reminded me of life's uncertain track.

I realized I forgot to tip the man who served my stay,

so I came back to the place so I could find the man and pay.

He thanked me for my honesty and offered me a gift.

A fortune, like the one that had just got my mood to shift.

I took it and just turned away, instead of being rude.

I left the room to read my destiny in solitude.

I read it and I would have yelled, had shock not clogged my voice.

The little slip of paper said "You've made the better choice."
