The rise in popularity of Cosplay in the US

Cosplay, the dressing up as characters from anime, video games, and manga, has started to see a rise in popularity in the US. Though not as big here as in other countries, the numbers are increasing. This can be traced to a number of factors.

The rise in popularity of anime, video games, and manga is, of course, a major contributor. After all, it is hard not to find at least one character that you do not mind dressing up as. Not to mention the challenge and pride that comes from successfully making that elaborate costume.

Cosplay has also seen increased exposure in printed media. A lot of the anime magazines have featured articles about cosplay. These articles have shown how to get started as well as where to buy costumes (for those that don't like sewing). Plus photos of cosplayers are often a regular feature in the magazines. Not to mention some contests are also run by the magazine. Books devoted to cosplay have also been released in the US helping anyone interested get started.

Anime clubs have also play a big role in this growing phenomena. Many clubs host cosplay events, like mini fashion shows that show off members' costumes. Clubs also host work shops that teach sewing techniques, pattern reading, wig styling, how to wear costumes, and getting started. Some clubs also have outings where the members pick a place (like a park or bowling) and go in costume.

Anime conventions have also seen an increase in attendance with many cosplayers taking part. Although we haven't seen a major cosplay convention in the US yet, the cosplay event is one of the most poplar events at anime conventions. Many times the event is hosted by a celebrity (often a voice actor), and sometimes the special guests to a convention are in attendance. The distributors of various anime shows also encourage cosplaying of their anime and manga, offering up prizes and hosting contests because that increases exposure of their product. This is still relatively new to the US, but is very popular in other countries.

Finally, the web has helped with every convention posting pictures of cosplayers that attended their event. There are even some web sites, such a Cure and Cosplay.com, that let cosplayers set up a profile and show off their costumes as well as exchange ideas with other cosplayers. These websites also host or let members know of cosplay events or contests coming up.

Cosplay, while still small compared to other countries, will hopefully continue to grow here in the US. Maybe someday we will see a cosplay cafe, shop, or even a convention devoted entirely to cosplay.
