Easter Craft Ideas
Easter is about springtime and renewed life so what better craft is there than to make baby chicks? The are cute and cuddly and young children are fascinated by these sweet, fuzzy creatures. Here are a few baby chick crafts for a fun-filled Easter.
Baby chick in an egg
This is a simple craft guaranteed to delight young children. You will need yellow posterboard, white posterboard, yellow feathers, googly eyes, one brad for each chick, glue, yellow construction paper, scissors, a hole punch and a pencil. All of these supplies can be found at your neighborhood craft store.
Find a chick and egg pattern from a book, the internet or make your own. Make sure that the chick will fit in your egg shape. Cut out both shapes. Young children especially enjoy cutting and it makes this project their own creation. Then you will need to draw a crooked line on the egg from top to bottom so the egg can be cut in half. Stack one half of the egg on top of the other and use the hole punch to make a hole at the bottom. You should end up with one chick and two pieces of egg.
Now the decorating fun begins. Put the glue, feathers and googly eyes out along with the chick and egg, and let the children go for it. You will be so surprised at the wonderfully decorated baby chicks. The only thing that remains to be done is to attach the egg to the chick with a brad, but wait until they are dry or the baby chicks won't be able to hatch!
Another baby chick in an egg
Eggs were made for baby chicks! So here is another easy chick and egg craft. You'll need plastic Easter eggs, Easter grass, one-inch yellow pom-poms, googly eyes, orange paper, craft glue, and scissors. Most children usually want to make more than one so you might want to plan for several.
First, you need to construct the baby chicks. Simply glue together two pom-poms and then glue googly eyes on the top for the head. Next cut out a diamond shape for the beak and fold it in half, Glue this on the head also. You may need to stop and hold each piece on until the glue gets tacky enough to stick. You can use regular white glue for this project but craft glue works better.
After your baby chick is ready, the next step is to glue easter grass into the bottom half of the plastic Easter egg. Make sure you don't put too much or your chick won't fit in the egg. When your grass in glued in the egg, you can then add a little more glue and put your baby chick in the egg. Wait until the glue is dry before you put the top on the egg as the glue dries quicker that way. You can use a hot glue gun for this project to speed drying time but be aware that hot glue can melt your easter grass. Once dry, these little babies are ready for the Easter egg hunt.
Baby Chick Easter Hat
Here's a quick and fun variation on the Easter bonnet that children can do on their own. You will need an assortment of foam visors, foam stickers with an Easter theme which are sure to have baby chicks and eggs in them. If not, you can buy the foam in sheets and make your own Easter shapes. You will also need a few permanent markers of various colors for children to write or color with. You can find these supplies at most craft stores. The foam stickers come in all kinds of themes besides Easter, anywhere from bugs to flowers to dinosaurs. You can also use the foam shapes without the paper backing but you will need to purchase craft glue as well. Make sure children are wearing old clothes when using the permanent markers.
Hand out the supplies and let children decorate to their hearts content. When they are done it will be time for the Easter bonnet parade.
Happy Easter!
