Game idea for the entire family: Kite flying

There are few things that are more freeing than a flying a kite on a nice breezy day. Kite flying is the type of activity that the whole family can get involved in, and children of all ages enjoy watching that little shape of material dance around the sky. Even with our technologically advance society, kids and adults can still find great fun in simple things like kite flying. Of course, kite flying is not a perfect activity for all conditions, because sometimes it simply doesn't work, due to weather conditions. However, if the weather is right, it can be a great family activity. Here are a few thoughts on kite flying as a family acitivity.

Feeling a gentle breeze

While it may seem like an obvious statement, kite flying doesn't really work very well without some steady wind. Sometimes, people try to force the activity of kite flying, which can be disasterous if kids get their hopes up and there is no breeze. Therefore, parents in particular have to make sure that they suggest kite flying as an activity only if they know of a location that gets good wind. Otherwise, they will find themselves sprinting across an open field, with a low-flying kite being pulled being them. That can get old very fast for everyone involved.

Involvement

If people find a nice windy place, such as by an ocean or lake, or in a seasonally windy area, it can be great fun for everyone. Adults may be better at maneuvering a kite, but kids down the age of three or four can often maintain a kite in the air if the wind is fairly consistent. The important thing with kite flying is to get everyone involved so that it is truly a family activity.

Food and fun

Of course, everyone goes better with food. Kite flying is fun, but the excitement can start to wane after a time. Therefore, kite flying may be best when mixed with a picnic, or other outdoor activities like playing catch with balls or frisbees. In addition, even traditionally windy places can have lulls in the overall breeze, which means that parents should have some backup activities ready to go.

Overall, kite flying does not have to be complex and it does not have to expensive. Many department stores carry inexpensive canvas kites that will work just fine for families. They may not last for decades, but for a few years they can representative some cheap fun the entire family. Therefore, find a little wind and go fly a kite!
