Considerations before becoming a parent

Making the decision to have a child is one of the biggest, most life-altering choices that most of us will make in our entire lives. However, if you are debating about whether or not to become a parent, there are some issues you consider before making such a crucial commitment.

Talk to your partner.

Although in today's day and age, virtually anything is possible when it comes to conception and having a baby, if you are involved in a traditional relationship with a partner and are considering whether or not to become parents, it is crucial that you are both on the same page about the issue. Both you and your partner need to be comfortable with the idea of becoming parents and you both need to be equally ready and committed to the demands that are required of parents. No matter how desperately you may want to be a parent, it is important for you not to pressure your partner into this life-altering decision. Not only could this lead to bitterness and resentment that may eventually threaten your relationship, it could also have irreparable consequences for a child brought forth from your union.

Think about your motivations.

Are you really ready to have a child? Or, is your desire to become a parent a result of some other motivation? Individuals should not make the decision to become parents as a result of pressure from their family members or because "everyone else" is doing it. If you are not 100 percent sure about whether or not you want a child, DON'T DO IT. In addition, some individuals want to become parents in an effort to save a relationship. This is also a poor reason to have a child. Having a baby to save a relationship may mask issues for a period of time, but this is only a band-aid that will ultimately unravel. At the end of the day, those issues between you and your partner will still be there. Ideally, couples that want to become parents should ensure that they work out any unresolved conflicts PRIOR to making the decision to conceive.

What is your financial situation?

Financial stability is extremely important for individuals who are considering whether or not to become parents. Not only will you need to ensure that your family's basic needs (like shelter, food, and clothing) are taken care of, you'll also have the additional costs of diapers, formula, medical bills, and schooling. Some couples may find that they will need to adjust their spending habits in order to accommodate a child. Are you and your partner willing to make some changes in your lifestyles
