Washington State Flag

Washington State has an unusual flag. Its characteristics came from its name and its history and the work of citizens. Two of the characteristics of the flag fit only the State of Washington. The flag came from the develop of names, and seals.

The Name

The state received its name to honor the first president of the United States. The flag includes the famous image of the first president from currency. A little known fact is that the state also has two small towns name George and Martha. The town of Martha remains very small and unknown. Many famous musical groups can remember playing in the town of George because a large outdoor amphitheatre drew crowds to a winery near this small town. It also has a nickname

Washington State has a nickname, which is the Evergreen State because half the state's natural plant habitat includes heavily wooded Fir trees and pine trees covered another portion of the state. Tumbleweeds cover the rest of the state. The chosen color of the flag came from the natural habitat. Petrified wood is the state gem because of a famous petrified forest in the middle of the state. The colors come from nature but the representations on the flag appear in other locations.

The Seal

Within the rotunda of the Capital Building in Olympia Washington sits the seal of the State of Washington. The first jewelry store to open in the state of Washington was Talcott jewelers and owner's son, Charles designed the seal with a bottle of ink and a silver dollar. He asked his brother to letter around the seal the words seal of the state of Washington and his brother cut out the die. Since the silver dollar had the first President of the United States, George Washington, the image of the state namesake fills the center of the logo.

State Flag

The green bunting holds the image of the state seal and the color is unique. No other state has a green flag. The center of the flag holds the image of the state seal so it holds the image of the first president of the United States the state namesake. No other state holds the image of a United States President. When the flags of the fifty states fly in one location, the flag of Washington State's flag stands out as easily identifiable. First, you notice the color and than can make the assumption it is for the state of Washington because of the image.

Washington State, the 42nd state ties itself through its name and image on its flag and honors the natural bounty with the color of its flag.
