Hunting as a sport has gone down in popularity compared to what it was about a hundred years back. Naturally, deer hunting is also on the wane.
There are several reasons for the dying interest in deer hunting. First and foremost, I would says times have changed. A hundred years ago there was forests and wild woods all around human habitation. People would use horses to go hunting and hence they could go very far away from their houses. Secondly, with the invention of cinema, television and other sports like baseball, basketball, rugby, people spend more time doing those than pursuing hunting as a sport. Besides, the fighting instinct in human beings has got blunt.
Lots of people look down upon hunting as a sport, terming it barbaric and inhuman. The other reason for deer hunting to be a dying sport is that people have become more conscious about animals and their rights. More and more people are looking down on hunting activities as they think it is inhuman to hunt animals and then let them free. Most of the hunters justify their acts reasoning that they do not kill the animals. But this argument does not find too many buyers.
Another reason for the waning interest in the sport is because it has become a costly proposition. You need licenses, guns, time away from work etc. In comparison people get the same amount of relaxation, if not more, by playing other sports and at a far lesser cost.
Now deer hunting is a dying sport but it is not totally dead. This means hunting is still going on and lot of deer are getting hunted. So there are a lot of injured deer going around the woods. Besides, unless we stop this practice this could make them endangered which would be sad. It is high time the government banned deer hunting which will bring the practice to an end.
Lot of people justify deer killing by pointing out we are doing the same with cows, lamb, chicken and fishes. Inspite of knowing that deer is not farmed unlike the others. They point out that venison (deer meat) is more healthy than either beef or lamb. It is supposed to be less fattening than beef. Naturally, such an alternative meat option is very welcome but what such people forget is that it comes at a price.
It is indeed true that deer hunting is a dying sport today. More and more people of the new generation are moving away from this cruel and antiquated sport. Today's youth have variety of interests in the different sports and pastimes which has helped the mute animals to survive amongst the bid bad man!
