Defining Christian faith

by June McGee

Created on: April 10, 2009

All through the Bible there are numerous verses which deal with faith. We can find out how to acquire faith, how to operate in faith, how to make faith grow stronger, how to live and walk in faith, etc. but I recently have found that in all of this, I have not answered the question, "What Is Faith?" What I mean is this Exactly what is faith? In order to get a line on this question I did an extensive study in faith, using the King James Version of the Bible as the source text, along with several reference texts to give a more clear meaning to what the Bible has to say about what faith is. What follows are several pertinent excerpts from that study.

I have come to understand that in its most general form, faith is a reliance on, trust in, and conviction toward the truth and trustworthiness of God. That is to say, we begin to rely on and trust in God, and our life's conviction is that God alone is truth and trustworthy. Once we have this much down and have implemented it in our lives, it just gets better and better. We move on then, into the areas where we actually begin to live and walk in the glorious liberty and light of the Holy Spirit within us. We understand God's great purpose for us and we are then able to see things as God sees them. By faith we know that we will never lack because God is with us, at our side, able and willing to provide all that we need to accomplish the things He has given us to do. On a personal note, I want to achieve the level of faith that is like this - If no man on earth stands with me, then I stand alone with Jesus, knowing that He is with me. In all truth, I realize that I am quite far from arriving at that level of faith, but this is my goal and my desire in this earthly life. Is this a high aspiration? On the contrary, I believe that it is expected that we will grow and mature in faith. It is expected that we do not simply reach a comfortable level of faith and then do no more in the way of growing. Faith is designed to be ever-moving and ever-growing. Faith is like swimming. Once you are out there in the deep water, if you suddenly stop swimming, you will start sinking. You might be able to kick your feet and thrash your arms for a little while as you struggle to stay afloat, but eventually, without faith, we will get weary and we start to sink. Peter, walking on the water to go to Jesus, is a classic example. So long as his faith was in Jesus (his eyes were on Jesus) he was able to walk on the water. However, as soon as Peter
