There is no doubt that pit bulls have been a very controversial topic over the recent years. Some people love them and other people hate them. I for one believe that a pit bull dog can be man's best friend. I am sure many people will disagree with me on this particular topic, but that is fine with me.

I n all honesty I was afraid of pit bulls also, that is until my little brother brought one home with him. He named the dog Boots. Boots is a little over a year old now. I have a three year old daughter, so when I walked into my parents house and this huge dog met me at the door I was very concerned about my daughters' safety. I had heard about pit bulls being considered as vicious animals.

But, as it turns out Boots is a very good dog. He is a big lap dog. Boots is also great with my daughter. However, he is very protective of her and my little brother, which has caused a couple of minor problems. He wants to protect them from the wrong people sometimes. Other than this small set back Boots is just a big baby. He even likes to sit in our laps. Whenever you see my little brother, Boots is right there with him. I often tease my brother and tell him that Boots is his shadow.

There is a town ordinance for owning a pit bull dog in the town that we live in. One of the rules for ownership of a pit is that they can not go outside without a leash on. I completely agree with this rule. My brother follows all the rules of the ordinance and he has not had any problems.

I think pit bull dogs have been given a bad reputation. I also believe that one should get a pit bull when it is still a pup, that way you can train them to behave the way you want them to. I honestly believe that the owner has a lot to do with how an animal behaves. You can not be mean to a dog and expect it not to defend itself. Many pit bulls are bred to be fighting dogs. This is an awful injustice to these animals, because aggressiveness is all they know. This is why there are the rules for owning a pit bull, because there are so many people that fight these dogs that no one knows who is fighting them and who is not.

In closing, I believe that pit bull dogs have the capability to be mans' best friend. When they are treated well and you follow the rules of ownership there should not be any problems. All animals have the tendency to be aggressive not just pit bulls. I think pit bulls are good dogs, but would also advise people to research the breed before going out and buying one because they are a big responsability.
