Supercuts is to the art of hairstyling what McDonald's is to the world of the culinary arts. While both establishments have their place in the world, no one in their right mindgoes into one expecting a masterpiece. With over 2,100 locations, Supercuts employs well over 20,000 hairstylists. With such a large number of stylists, the talent level found at your local Supercuts can vary greatly. However, my opinion is that your chances of sitting in the chair of a scissor-wielding maniac are much higher at Supercuts than in an upscale private salon.
As a hairstylist with over a decade of experience, I, like many others in the industry, began my career working in a chain salon. For the novice stylist, a place like Supercuts is a great way to develop your skills and develop them quickly. After all, you'll get better much faster when you are performing 20 haircuts a day as opposed to working in a private salon, where you rarely perform more than 10 haircuts a day. Unfortunately, no customer wants to be the proverbial guinea pig to an aspiring hairstylist with little experience.
Does this mean that all Supercuts stylists are novices? Of course not. There are many hairstylists with decades of experience who work at Supercuts. These are the stylists you should be scared of.
Why? Just as most people in the business worldaspire to climb the corporate ladder, hairstylists aspire to climb the fashion ladder. This means being able to charge out the wazoo for a cut, wear all black, and speak with a phony European accent. Or at least work in a reputable salon. If a stylist with years of experience has not progressed beyond Supercuts, warning alarms should be sounding inside of your head.
Does this mean that you should avoid Supercuts? Not at all. Like all chain salons, Supercuts has its place in the world. Some of us who aren't extraordinarily picky about their hair can't see the logic of paying $75.00 for a trim at a swanky salon. And for those of us who are pressed for time and always on-the-go, Supercuts is a viable option. After all, no matter how sophisticated you are, you probably have a hankering for a McDonald's cheeseburger every once in a while. Sometimes we are all looking for something fast and cheap. Sometimes we want instant gratification. Even if we wake up with regrets the following morning.
Also consider the fact that the next Vidal Sassoon or Nick Arrojo is probably working at a Supercuts right now, honing his or her skills. Giving this aspiring and talented unknown stylist a chance to grow and improve is the only way the beauty industry as a whole can grow. After all, each of us had to start somewhere, and for many of us that somewhere is Supercuts.
