3485 Main Highway
Coconut Grove, Florida 33133

The Barnacle was once the home of Commodore Ralph Middleton Monroe, one of the pioneer founders of the Coconut Grove area of Miami, which today houses upscale shops and boutiques, numerous restaurants, and a strip of laid back bars catering to the college students that hail from the nearby University of Miami and Florida International University campuses. The Barnacle house and its boathouse were built in the nineteenth century and the grounds have been preserved through the years with the dedication of volunteers and invaluable contributions from generous locals. Tours of the house offer visitors a glimpse into the distant South Florida past, when Miami was barely on the map and mangroves overtook the area. The guided tours are available throughout the day at 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, and 2:30pm. Otherwise, visitors can also enjoy a gorgeous view of the bay on one of the numerous rocking chairs situated on the sprawling porch or browse the tropical hardwood hammock surrounding the home. The Barnacle is closed on Tuesdays and various holidays throughout the year, but is open every other day from 9am to 5pm. Tickets are measly $1 per person and children under 6 are admitted for free.
