Is life worth living?

If someone is asking whether life is worth living, chances are they are asking for help and should be taken seriously. Today, it may be difficult to discern whether they are to be taken serious because many do not want to be perceived as weaklings. Perhaps, it is best to error on the side of caution and seek help for someone when you hear them pondering about whether life is worth living.

By anyone's standards we are living in difficult times that are unparalleled to any seen in recent history. Sadly, it is simply not only about the financial market failures, but it is also about the toll events are having on families and how many are coping and conversely the lethal options many are taking.

Over the last few decades, many folks lived their lives based on the opinions of others; it is difficult to ascertain when the Nation took a turn in this direction. The barometer of folks' worthiness has been determined based on whether they lived in the best neighborhood and had the largest house, whether they held the most influential job in the largest firm, whether their children attend the most prestigious school or college and whether they drove the latest model automobile. It seemed these same superficial trappings also determined friendships, church affiliations, and all other social encounters.

During the past couple of weeks, there were some highly publicized cases where very prominent men in their community lost their jobs and seemingly with that loss, believed everything else that mattered was also lost. Each believed the only way out of their circumstances was to not only kill themselves but to also slaughter their families. These men had family members who lamented that losing their jobs and the lessening of their status in the community caused them to slay their families as well as themselves. The eleven or so children who died deserved so much more than have their lives snuffed out because of possessions and prestige.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting the best life has to offer; there is nothing wrong with working hard to achieve goals; and there is nothing wrong with friendly competition as it can sometimes help one reach his or her highest aspirations. There is something wrong with letting possessions become one's master or allowing competition domination over one's faculties.
