Debate on the war in Iraq

"Society in every state is a blessing, but government even in its best state is but a necessary evil in its worst state an in tolerable one; for when we suffer, or are exposed to the same miseries by a government, which we might expect in a country without government, our calamities is heightened by reflecting that we furnish the means by which we suffer! Government, like dress, is the badge of lost innocence; the palaces of kings are built on the ruins of the bowers of paradise." Thomas Paine's "Common Sense."

I, like many Americans, do not know the real reasons our government has chosen to invade Iraq. To debate this issue is to examine the facts and reasons behind the steps we take to "defend Democracy."

Without the facts, there is no debate.

It is for this reason that I move to demand the truth from our elected officials, our government, our neighbors and most importantly, our President.

Thomas Paine was a pioneer who questioned the British government when they were in control of the colonies, which would eventually become the United States of America. Were Paine alive today, I feel that he would not stand for hypocrisy, aristocracy, nor bigotry, which is what I feel is happening today regarding the War on Terror.

Not only is ours a similar situation to the one Paine wrote about, but I think it is a worse situation. Paine may have led the way to a democratic, free America, but America is not leading the way to a free, democratic Iraq. America has done away with democracy and freedom and replaced it with oil and dollars.

Regarding the debate on Iraq, we as Americans, and we as Humans, should DEMAND the facts regarding the United States' invasion in Iraq, otherwise we are no better than our oppressors. In order to expand Democracy in Iraq, we need to ACT democratically. In order to act democratically, we need to think democratically and the first step is to demand the truth. When truth is provided, democracy will follow.
