Poetry: A fall

by Hayley Campbell

Created on: April 10, 2009   Last Updated: October 29, 2011

Haven't had a nice day
since, I don't know, way
long before I fell for you.
At any moment, I'm hoping you too
will realize we could work together
and then I won't have to decide whether
or not I'm having a good day.
You know, I don't much like to wait
for responses. But for you, I'm making an exception,
even though your response will most undoubtedly be rejection.
Let's just say
my heart aches
when I think of the truth of it all.
It's like I'm on the edge of a cliff about to fall
into a pit of broken glass.
Exasperated, I stand there waiting. It came so fast...
Your non-existent words blew in the wind that knocked
me from the edge and rocked
me jaggedly as I crashed
into the pit of broken glass.
You looked uncaringly over the edge at my flailing, mangled
body. As I draw my last breath, I try to get a hold on my strangled
self and talk as my lips are turning blue.
Feebly and half-breathless, I manage to call out, "I fell for you."
