New York hotels: New hotels opening up in NYC

Three new hotels have opened in New York City, with 17 more hotels in the works before the end of 2009. Of these, only the Sheraton Brooklyn is planned for Brooklyn, leaving this burough as underserviced as ever. It is scheduled to open in fall 2009.

Hilton Garden Inn Tribeca
6 York Street, near 6th and Canal, (212) 966-4091

You can't beat the location. This Hilton is in a quiet Manhattan neighborhood just on the other side of Canal Street from SoHo, a stone's throw away from great dining, with an A/C/E subway stop seconds away. The rooms are a bit on the small side, but they come with microwave, minifridge, and a kettle. The beds promise the best night's sleep you have had in a long time. Free Internet and HBO, free cookies at the reception desk and newspaper in the morning, complimentary use of the 24/7 business center. The flatscreen television has a VGA connection for large-scale displays. Current promotional and package rates are exceptional, no telling how long they will last. Valet parking is $55 per night. Better tell your cabbie to look for 6th Ave and Canal, because York Street is tiny and didn't exist until this place was built.

Holiday Inn Manhattan View
39-05 29th Street, (718) 707-3700

As its name suggests, this brand-new Queens hotel offers many mid-sized rooms with exceptional views of Manhattan, especially from the 10th floor up. (Don't be confused by the neighborhood name. Long Island City is in Queens.) Trains into Manhattan are a block away and take 20 minutes to Midtown, while at the same time the hotel is conveniently close to JFK, La Guardia, and Newark airports. Rates are a third of what you might expect to pay in Manhattan for a comparably sized room, and include Internet and premium cable. There are only 12 parking spaces on-site at $20 per night, but there is plenty of curbside overnight parking in the area. Customer service is an issue, as are typical new-construction service glitches, but both might be ironed out with time.

Smyth Tribeca
85 West Broadway, (212) 587-7000
http://www.thompsonhotels.com

After several delays, the fifth Thompson Urban Resort in Manhattan is finally open in the heart of the Triangle Below Canal Street (TriBeCa). The timing couldn't be worse for Thompson, or better for its customers. Because the delays placed this soft opening of this elegant 100-room condo-hotel squarely in the middle of the worst financial crisis to hit in decades, early promotional rates are currently as low as $107 per night, almost unheard of anywhere in Manhattan. While these rates last, the Smyth Tribeca is not only one of the most luxurious hotels in Manhattan, but also one of the cheapest. Take advantage of it while you can. Simplicity, sophistication, style: that's the Smyth Tribeca in a nutshell.
