In such a fast-paced, multi-tasking world, it's often all too easy to push our own needs to the background. Unfortunately, when we do so we risk not only mental stress, but physical stress as well.
For this reason, it's imperative that we take a few moments each day to ensure a healthy balance between taking care of business, and taking care of ourselves. By devoting just ten minutes a day to nurturing self, we renew our energy and restore our ability to find peace in the midst of chaos.
An extra stolen moment or two can make all the difference. Consider the following:
Savor the Morning
The state of our morning often determines the state of our day. Rushing around frantically to find that missing shoe or those misplaced keys is no way to greet the morning. By doing so, you ensure that you're already stressed before the day has even begun.
Set out all needed supplies the night before, prior to retiring. This way, you ensure a calm morning with everything ready and in its place.
Instead of starting your day already behind, you'll find you're able to enjoy some peaceful time savoring that extra cup of coffee while gathering your thoughts and planning your day.
Take a quiet moment each morning to set a personal goal, one that has nothing to do with your responsibilities, and everything to do with you. It can be as simple as spraying on your favorite cologne or phoning a friend. The point is to build a little moment of self-nurturing into your schedule. It needn't be something huge, simply something you enjoy.
By preparing ahead of time, you allow yourself to dictate the structure of the day, instead of allowing the day to structure you.
Take a Breather
In the middle of the day as lunchtime approaches, step outside for some fresh air. Invite a friend along, or go it alone, depending on your need.
Take deep breaths and clear your mind of worrisome thoughts. Instead, focus on slowing your heart rate and relaxing your muscles. Just five minutes away from stress will allow you the opportunity to renew your energy, helping you to approach your tasks with a new sense of purpose.
End on a Positive Note
Once the day is done, the kids are in bed, and you're ready to retire, take a quiet moment to reflect. Pick out three things that happened during the day for which you feel grateful.
Maybe a friend gave you a compliment, or your child gave you a kiss. Maybe you made it through a presentation without flubbing, or the electric bill wasn't as big as you'd feared. Think of a time during the day in which you made progress towards a goal, personal or otherwise.
So often, we overlook the little things in life that bring us pleasure, but these small occurrences are the glue holding together the building blocks of our lives. They ensure balance, and when acknowledged, they provide a multitude of opportunities for small moments of happiness. What better note on which to end the day?
