Wow, this is a tough call, it really is. By the way, these are two of my favorite actors currently living. Overall, I like Bobby DeNiro's body of work just a little better. Both actors have been inconsistent, especially lately in their careers. They no longer receive the roles they once did. Both of these guys are clear legends, they brought something that is missing in today's generation. Both were clear dominating presences on screen, and the light shined the brightest on one another. I'll never forget, when these two brilliant actors, and close friends, finally shared screen time together, in Michael Mann's action-packed thriller, the Heat.
In 1995, these two finally are on sceen together, after over 20 years of acting between these heavyweights. When the two were finally to be doing a movie together, who could imagine anything better. This felt like Magic Johnson and Larry Bird on the same team. For those who aren't familiar with sports, two basketball players who shared a long historical rival, and frienship off the court.
it wasn't their greatest acting performance, or movies they have done throughout the years. Although that's definitely no knock on this outsanding movie and the performances these two did deliver. When you compare Heat, to Godfather or Raging Bull, it's still apples to oranges.
Let me briefly run down what the movie Heat is about, where I believe it somewhat ties into this topic. It's about a guy who is a professional thief(DeNiro), who is being chased by an LAPD cop (Pacino), in this high packed action flick. DeNiro vs Pacino, is basically the plot of the movie. So when these two actors finally embrace the audience in one scene. It's no longer Vincent Hanna (Panico), vs Neil McCauley (DeNiro). It's just simply DeNiro and Pacino. I've never watched a scene, that felt actor themselves were bigger than the characters or storyline before, than when I do whenever I watch this scene. That's the kind of presence and greatness these two of a kind have given us over the course of time. The scene honestly could probably sum up not only how each character feels about one another, but how each actor does, too. They clearly respect each other to a great degree. They clearly even liked one another. But at the same time, they still want to out do the other. It's that competitive edge, that drives these two to such greatness. Not only their characters in the movie, but in real life. It's like two men, wanting to pound their chest the loudest. Who could
