Some lyrics are okay, some are good, and then some are spectacular. I think the song (though I'll still tell you) the lyrics are in is irrelevant, if they're good words, with a good vibe, then it doesn't matter. Some songs have the power to make you feel cheery, some to make you feel sad. Some, even make you feel dirty. I'm going to try to incorporate a little bit of all of those in this.
1. Talking in Your Sleep - The Romantics
Sometimes, the simplest things are the best. Sometimes they say the most, while saying nearly nothing. The lyrics "I hear the secrets that you keep, when you're talking in your sleep" are easily some of the best lyrics, because they're so simple. Plainly telling her that she tells him the truth while she's sleeping, and he knows her lies. The lyrics themselves leave you imagining it so vividly; a man in bed with his girlfriend, lying close, even holding her as she starts talking, babbling to her lover, spilling her lies to him as he is struck to the core, realizing how it all makes sense, putting the lies together like a puzzle, from the outside in. Night after night he listens, hearing more and more. Her lies.
2. Sister - She Wants Revenge
Sister is a song about one of the most taboo things; a nun. She Wants Revenge furthers its taboo by making it about a nun who wants sex; any kind of sex. This is one of the songs that make you feel dirty, quickly. In the beginning when you realize it's about a nun, you immediately feel dirty, but when you hear the chorus, the lyrics "She closed her eyes and said quit the talking, you can hurt me do whatever you like. She crossed herself, now the moments are missing, you can hurt me do whatever you like" you get an immediate shudder, a tingle up your spine like it's the dirtiest thing you've ever felt. The words in this song are so succinct, so precise.
3. Roses Are Red - Aqua
Aqua is a band that everyone knows for Barbie Girl, but they actually had two albums (very good albums, for the record.) The song Roses are Red has lyrics that have always made me smile, and make me smile every time I hear them, "Roses are red and violets are blue, honey is sweet, but not as sweet as you." These are cute words, that always make me happy whenever I hear them. It might be a little Hallmark-y, or even a tiny bit childish, but it makes me smile.
4. Arulpragasam - mc chris
A little known song from a little known artist, it's about wanting a girlfriend who gets you. The chorus goes "As much as I love comic and these video games, I need a little something not just any old dame. I need a little lady, make my life less lame, 'cause the future's harder to say than M.I.A.'s last name." M.I.A.'s last name is of course, Arulpragasam, the same as the title. It's a cute song, from a cute rapper, about a sad thing. It gives you a good feeling, and makes you remember your own love, and not take it for granted.
