I had grown up with many pets; fish, hamsters, dogs, cats, birds, etc. but when we had decided to get a bearded dragon it was a whole new world to me as I am sure that it is for you. Below I have included a list of the many things that you must consider and do in order to keep your bearded dragon happy and healthy. If you need further clarification on anything you should search the Internet or ask a local pet store. When it comes to a pet, especially one so small that cannot communicate with you how it feels, you should always check before assuming and simply trying something.

For the sake of this article I will use my bearded dragon, Draco, as an example of the things that are needed in bearded dragon care. So, let's begin:

1) The Habitat: As bearded dragon's grow, the bigger the terrarium- the better. Your dragon needs room to move around. Sand should be used for the flooring of the habitat and in any pet store you can find appropriate little dishes and rocks for food, water, shelter, and lounging. The bearded dragon is an animal that requires a certain amount of heat. Heat lamps can be purchased and used for the care of your bearded dragon. If you are unsure of the strength of the heat lamp that you should be getting for your dragon, ask a local pet store owner. As well, the bearded dragon also needs a UV lamp for the terrarium as well. Without these things (especially the heat) it is harder for the bearded dragon to digest it's food and it will thus become ill.

2) Behaviour: Your dragon is a very calm animal when with people. Do not start taking the dragon out when it is too young but slowly allow it to come out and with time you can make it so that your bearded dragon will sit on your hand our your shoulder, as Draco does for us. Bearded Dragons, like most lizards however, do not like the company of other lizards and what-not. In many cases the smaller of the two animals will die so please keep your bearded dragon on it's own except for breeding, etc.

3) Food: Bearded Dragons love their vegetables and crickets. Draco's favourite thing to eat is celery. Carrots, squash, celery, corn, and fruits offered in small amounts are great for the bearded dragon. Mix it up and create salads for him. There are tons of websites that list all of the foods that a bearded dragon can and cannot eat (there are a ton of vegetables that they are unable to eat). You can also purchase small supplements that you can give to your dragon, and pre-made snacks. These are available at your local pet store.

4) Bathing: Yes, bearded dragons also need to bath. It is important. This allows them a chance to often go to the washroom but also keeps them happy and hydrated. Draco loves his bath. He is truly like a child. He will fight because he does not want to go in but once he gets in he does not want to leave. Have the water a bit warm but not too warm. I try to keep a light on Draco when he is in his bath because he enjoys that. As well, keep the water low so that it just sits above its shoulders.

A bearded dragon is a great pet to have. It is easy to take care of, fun to have, and just absolutely adorable. I never would have imagined that a lizard would have such a huge effect on me but I honestly miss Draco when I am away from home. I think that everyone should make this bond with their pet, especially the bearded dragon as it is so great to have around.
