Keeping your job is foremost in everyones minds these days. The job market is weak and if you lose your job it could be very hard to find another one. The last thing you want to do is to get in big trouble at work. Here are ten things that you should avoid.
Stealing
The best way to get into big trouble at work is to steal from your employer. This can also get you arrested,. Stealing from your employer can involve much more than just not paying for your cup of coffee in the coffee room or stealing from the cash drawer. It can mean making long distance calls on the company phone, bringing home pens and paper clips, doing personal copying on the company copier and leaving early or coming in late.
Using the work computer for personal things
In today's work environment, this can be anything from shopping online to visiting porno sites. Why people think no one will notice makes no sense but rest assured, if you do it, you will be caught and probably fired.
Lying on your resume
Don't exaggerate your qualifications and don't say you graduated from MIT, unless of course you did. These days it is very easy for employers to verify the information that you put on your resume and you will be fired if false information is found. Getting fired never looks good on your resume.
Not doing your job
Let's face it; everyone has a job they are being paid to do. If you are not doing yours you will get in trouble. It may take a while for them to figure out who the weak link is but in the end they will find out who isn't doing their share.
Missing too much time
Most jobs comes with a certain amount of sick time, vacation time and personal time. If you take more time off than you are allowed you will get into trouble. You will also risk being disciplined and may even lose your job. If you are sick, make sure that you get a doctor's note to bring to your employer.
Coming in late or leaving early
Most jobs have a start time and an end time. Your employer may or may not be flexible about those times. If you are supposed to start at 8:00am and consistently arrive at work at 8:10am there will be trouble at some point. Maybe your current boss is forgiving but perhaps his or her replacement will not be. You need to make punctuality a part of your working life.
Bringing your personal life to work
Everyone has a life. It needs to stay at home. Your fellow employees do not want to hear you and your spouse or significant other arguing on the phone or your dispute your your child
