Is working at McDonald's worse than simply eating at McDonalds?

McDonald's is the primary target whenever someone wants to attack the fast food industry over unhealthy food and the obesity epidemic.

Moderation is key for most things that we do in life and eating fast food is one of those things. That said, I think that those who choose to eat fast food such as McDonald's food do so knowing that too much is a bad thing.

But those are often the customers of McDonald's. They make the choice to pull into the drive-thru or walk into the restaurant. They look at the menus and decide what the order and they use their hard earned money to make that choice.

Plus they often spend very little time in the environment of a fast food restaurant and the time spent eating the fast food is usually very brief.

What about people who work at McDonalds?

They work there for various reasons, but the main reason for working there is likely because it is a job. A job pays money and if you really need a job, you'll take any work that you can get.

Whatever reason people choose to work at McDonalds, the fact is that they are exposed to the fast food they make and sell on a daily basis.

They have to deal with potentially hundreds of customers a day whether it involves taking orders and payments or preparing the fries or sandwiches, they are surrounded by the McDonald's environment and food for hours at a time.

It has to be worse to work at McDonald's when compared to simply being a customer there. It is likely that many employees of McDonald's consume the food served there more often than the average customer.

They often get a meal or two a day there for free or at a huge discount while working. Even those who buy their lunch or dinner may eat there out of time constraints and convenience.

Simply being exposed to the available food and drink that is around you on a regular basis leads naturally to consuming that available food and drink.

Of course, some people that work there may eat elsewhere or bring their own lunch some workdays but the fact of the matter is that being around all the fast food makes it more likely employees will eat it more often than those walking in as customers.

Combine the fast paced fast food work environment with dealing with customers all day and working in hot kitchens filled with greasy food and you can see why working at McDonald's is worse than simply eating there from time to time.
