In this fast-paced life we live in leading a well-balanced life isn't easy. We get swept up in 21st Century living and material possessions; the weight of the world is always on our shoulders. Here's a few tips to keep your life in balance.
Firstly, slow down. Smell the roses. Take the time to really look around you and enjoy it. When you open your senses to the world around you, you'll be amazed at all the things you discover.
If you find that you barely have enough time to sleep, this can also lead to problems. You'll be more affected by stress, have trouble concentrating and may even suffer from mood swings, so make sure you're getting your recommended 8 hours of sleep.
Keep a journal. Bottling our feelings leads to an unhealthy mind. We feel tired, moody and sometimes even lost. So write it down. Vent on paper. One thing to remember is always end on a happy note. Why not write a sentence or two about something you saw or heard today that made you smile, or a compliment someone gave you. For an instant up-lift, re-read those statements.
Always remember that too much work and no play leads to a very unbalanced lifestyle. If you spend all your time at work, not only will it start to affect your personal and home life, but you'll become known as the go-to person, which means your inbox will never empty, with a constant new stream of work heading your way and someone always asking you to stay later. After getting into this pattern, it can be very hard to get back out again. The best way to avoid this is to learn early on when to say no.
To have a healthy mind you need a healthy body. The two will always go hand in hand. Exercise regularly. Not only does this keep you fit, it also releases Endorphines, the happy hormone. 20 minutes a day is all you need for a balanced lifestyle. Make sure you're eating a well-rounded diet with your five-a-day. A good diet will give you more energy, reduces the risk of health problems and also helps reduce stress levels.
Spend time with people who are good for you. We all need people who help boost our self-esteem and confidence. People we can talk to and are enjoyable to be around. So surround yourself with good people to help wash away the stress of a long day.
Finally, make sure that you make time for yourself , even if it's only for half an hour a day. Indulge in some pampering with a relaxing bath and a glass of wine. Curl up on the sofa with a good book, or watch a movie. Do some retail therapy or find a hobby you can spend time on when you want some 'me time'.
Follow these steps and you'll be on your way to a well-rounded, balanced lifestyle.
