Poetry: Falling in love

The Secret Life of Men

There are things my love, that to you I shall never tell
Secrets dark, and full of old desires
Of fortunes I had won and lost,
In the market towns and gambling halls.

Of maidens fair,
conquered and abandoned to their fates
that once I held close, and breathed sweet words.

And yes my love, I will never tell you
Of rum-fed companions that in youthful pranks
Had deigned to cause the fright of young and old
In the darkest of nights,
and with laughter had turned
The hearts and thighs of wanton girls.

Dear love, these things I shall never tell you
For if truth or lie, (and as a man there is much
That has gone before)
They mean naught to me, as nothing, another's life

To tell these things to you,
Would be another lie,
for these things are not the man you hold
the lips you kiss, or the eyes that gaze upon your face

For my life began again, anew and without remorse
That day you said you loved me true
There is nothing else to say.
