Basically a first car for a youngster to drive should be one s/he doesn't mind crashing. The uglier the car the better. If the car is already dented up no one will notice any new ones. It should also be large and roomy. Large because the sheer weight and size of the car will give added protection to the young driver. Roomy so they can take their friends for a ride in safety. The only draw back to one such car is they are usualy a Lead Sled. While they may go very fast right before the engine explodes they don't handle very well at high speeds. plus they take a lt of road, like an interstate, to get it to go very fast.
While I was in school to become an Automotive Technician I bought a project car. It was a Ford Crown Victoria what I and my brother considered it a good car for my nephew to drive. I sold the car to my brother telling him while it would be an older car it would be fairly safe. It had a 5.0 V-8 in it of course but it was a heavy car and would take a while to get to get it up to any high speed. So my brother forbade his son from using a divided highway where he could race it.
Crown Vicks as they are called are often used as police cars but that's the police interceptor model with the bigger engine, all the speed and handling options Ford had available. My Nephew called it an old man's car cause the guy next door had one and he was past 80. The Crown Vick was much like the cars my brother and I had learned to drive when we were younger. Very big with lots of metal surrounding the driver in case of an accident.
Now this car was not my Nephew's first choice. I could have gotten him a Honda Prelude that I knew he would have liked but was concerned because that is a much smaller car and with as many SUV's as there are on the road I thought a bigger four door sedan would be safer. Plus the Prelude was a stick and driving is hard enough to learn at first without learning how to drive a stick right away. My Nephew would have liked the Prelude better but I never gave him the choice. The Crown Vick was also better on my brother's insurance policy because the Prelude was considered a sports car.
Thanks to the laws in my Nephew's state the only people he was allowed to have in his car were one youngster his age and other adults. Also Cell phone use for a driver of a car is against the law and his license was a Cinderella license. It was only good until 12:00 midnight. That is until he turned 18. So his parents had no worries there. His state
