In these difficult economic times people may find themselves regularly experiencing more stress than in the past. The stress may be from one's own life, or from listening to the problems of your friends, family, and those you care about it. However, there are some simple steps that can be taken to balance your life and to help you to relax.
First and foremost - Laugh. Laughter will set you up to smile for the rest of the day. If you start your day off by checking your email, you may want to sign up for a free joke of the day subscription to be delivered to your inbox every morning. Perhaps you could also be sure to take time in your perusal of the morning paper to glance at least one of the comic strips. Laughter really is the best medicine.
Second - Lists. Having a clear idea of what to do each day and the priority in which those tasks stand for you will add organization and clarity to your life without much effort. However, don't be too strict with yourself. If you need to rearrange the list throughout the course of the day, do so.
Third - Walk. A walk, even as simple as a brisk walk around the block, can give you ample time to clear your mind, think about what you need to think about, and get you a bit of exercise. Exercise is helpful in any amount, and fresh air will surely serve to calm your nerves and help you to de-stress. With the wonders of modern technology, you can listen to your favorite music and create your own private concert. Music, combined with light exercise, can serve as a great escape from the stresses of everyday life.
Fourth - Talk. Come up with one sentence that you will say to yourself to encourage balance in your life. A simple statement that has a personal meaning can do wonders if you repeat it often, and saying it out loud to yourself will make it more real, and thus more encouraging. You may even want to write at the top of that list you made to help you through the day.
Fifth - Think. At the end of the day, take a few minutes and reflect over your day. What caused you the most stress? The least? By recognizing this, you will be able to make the necessary adjustments and your life will become more balanced one day at a time.
Yes, life can be stressful, but life is also meant to be enjoyed. Take time, even if just a few moments, for yourself each day. You'll be amazed at how much more often you find yourself smiling.
