Seldom, and then helpfully. Rating is an effective comment, and time flies (especially when you are using a library computer that has a timer on it). Praise seems to show up just when one needs a lift in spirit. When an author has written an exceptionally fine piece; commendation is in order. Helium is proving to be a valued tool in shaping writing skills. We can enhance its effectiveness by the occasional comment. Take the time to let someone know that they are doing fine. Correction? Seldom, too, and then aptly and with kindness. Naming the title commented on and the problem with specificity authenticates the merit of the criticism. A pleasant beginning lets the addressee know that their 'right to write' is acknowledged; that this message is a helpful one.
What we may praise is usually apparent. Uncommonly fitting imagery, grammar, and style deserve a comment. Unity, adhesion and coherence bring us a well-constructed article. We can say "Bravo".
There are many spelling errors, even in well thought out essays, that detract. If the distractions are few, they are often overlooked. When there numbers overwhelm content, it may not be irresponsible to let the rating be comment enough. Spell checks are a help to let the writer know there may be a problem. But the author's choice of usage and a thoroughgoing dictionary should have been consulted during the rewrite process.
What does one do if he comes across an incorrect attribution for a quote? Sometimes these even escape a Leapfrog. The small courtesy of calling the writer's attention is in order.
What if the worldview or opinion differs? We are human. It is difficult to be objective when is great disagreement with what is written. One finds oneself at "Skip", in fairness to the process; and bites his figurative tongue, without comment. Our responsibility is to rate the writing, not the opinion.
That bugbear of the literate world, plagiarism, seems to be more abroad in the land than before computers. How to handle it is a good question. Spotting it is easy. Scrubbing it out takes time and effort. Computers tell on themselves. Is the plagiarist daring, or just uncaring?
Helium offers the aspiring writer an opportunity to present ideas in a format that encourages. Have you ever read an Internet column that is followed with a string of comments, detracting from its import? We are spared these space-spending barrages. Helium commentary is from our fellows. We walk in the same shoes, so to speak. How would you like to be rated? So would all others, differing only by degree. The "Comment" chance to be helpful, with civility, should be used, and with care.
