Music is emotion. Music is communication. Music is expression.
No genre is better or worse than another. The key is to find the music that fits you and your vibe. Your musical choice is very personal. You listen to certain music because you like it, right? Well, think about it. Why exactly do you listen to that particular type of music? Because it taps into your world. It moves you in some way. It makes you smile, makes you cry, makes you angry, makes you relax. It effects you in some way, shape or form.
Example: I went to a Buddhist monastery with the hopes and intentions of finding tranquility and focus both in my life, and in my physical body. In my stay there, I engaged in something similar to a prayer vigil, where the monks and nuns literally chant for 2-3 hours nonstop. I was told it was not only about what was being chanted, but it was also obtaining the discipline of doing something consistently and seeing it through. I had never been to a Buddhist monastery, let alone heard Tibetan chants. Yet, not only did I end up catching on and chanting with my teachers, I pushed myself to be able to do it the entire time! It was so beautiful to me, and I wanted to be a part of this so much, I made a point to exercise my mind to achieve this goal. As my mind was working, my body was feeling more and more relaxed. As my body relaxed, my mind sharpened. It was an amazing experience.
So, how do we allow this beautiful element to keep us healthy and strong everyday? Two simple solutions:
1.) Open yourself up to it. Open your mind, body and soul to the music of your choice. Let your guard down when listening to the music you've chosen to listen to for that specific moment, or that specific mood. Feel the sounds. If it's vocals like chanting, listen to the phonetics and syntax of the chants for your focus. Use music to prepare you for your day. Use music to relax you when you go to bed.
2.) Choose the music best for your mood. No one can choose that for you. Only you know what type of music is for your being at that time. If you're preparing a presentation for work, and you feel you will be easily intimidated, play a form of music that will strengthen and build your confidence. If you have too much stress in your life, play a form of music that will relax your mind, ultimately relaxing your body. There is no type of music for one specific purpose. Different people can play the same song for completely different purposes. Make sure you play the right music for you and your purpose, not what others claim to be the right music for a particular mood. It's not their choice. Your body, your mind, your spirit...your musical choice.
Music makes the world go around. YOUR music makes you beautiful in mind, body and spirit.
