How do you find a reliable plumber?
There is just no need like the need for a reliable plumber. When you need a plumber, you may really need a plumber badly. But how do you find a good one? How do you know they won't take your money and leave you all backed up and nowhere to go?
Well, there are web directories, of course, and some people still have one of those big, thick, bound-paper volumes called a "phone book". On the web, there are sites that will deliver a list of plumbing services built around your zip code. You could try one of those. But what would you look for in the collection of either virtual or paper pages?
For one thing, you would look to be sure they were ready to handle your need. Let's say you wanted a tankless water heater installed. On the web, where they have plenty of room, you should be able to see a list of services including the installation of tankless water heaters. Of course in the book they won't have much room, so you might have to call and ask.
Also, you would want to be sure that they were available when you need them. If you have a situation on your hands that won't wait, you want to see that "Emergency Services" line in bold print.
In every home improvement or household emergency situation, the more you know the better choices you can make. So find out all you can before asking the plumber. You will understand better and be able to make a wiser decision. There are so many information sources available, starting with the internet, then the library, with a stop at the home improvement store, and maybe ending at the coffee shop or your neighbor's kitchen where you can ask someone for their recommendation.
Ah, here we are, at the recommendations. And that's the very best way to find a reliable plumber. There is nothing like having someone honestly report that the service rendered was just what was required, and that they would recommend the contractor personally. Most web sites will list testimonial references. Reliable companies will give references if requested. Don't be shy about checking them out.
If you get to ask questions, ask about price as promised. Ask about the quality of their work and their ability to meet expectations. Ask if they cleaned up the mess before they wrote out the bill. And, of course, ask about safety and trust. You are, after all, asking these people into your home or business.
Check for licensing. Those requirements vary by area, but unless you are so far out that you are probably your own plumber, there should be some form of licensing or official standards.
And finally, keep your eyes open. Does it look to you as if the work is going well and the workers know what they are doing? I mean, you did educate yourself on the subject, just for this purpose, right? If they say they are done, does it work? Did they restore the premises to their former pristine condition? Check for yourself.
You won't have any trouble finding a source of information concerning available plumbers. And if you follow the sensible guidelines suggested, you ought to come out of the situation smelling like a rose.
