Recommendations for comedic films

by Shelly Barclay

Some comedy is good for a chuckle with the kids. Some comedy is distasteful or not for the faint of heart. Some comedy is so absurd that you have to laugh and some comedy is so dry that it may take you a minute to realize that someone just told a joke. I'm a fan of all types of comedy so some of these suggestions may be offensive to you, while others may not find it offensive enough. The following is a list that contains, in my opinion, great examples of the diversity of comedy.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a just plain, ridiculous movie. From start to finish it is a masterpiece of senseless comedy. Set during the time of King Arthur (mostly) this film turns Black Plague and witch hangings into a side-splitting farce. Ridiculous antics range from demonic bunnies to sissy knights not to mention one of the funniest scenes of all time with King Arthur fighting the black Knight. If your looking for slapstick or offensive comedy this movie isn't for you, but if your looking for some inane and insane antics from the Monty Python crew then this is just the film.

Super Troopers

Another great comedic team is Broken Lizard. Broken Lizard's film Super Troopers is jammed with hilarious one liners and pranks. Super Troopers is the story of a Vermont state police station house that is in danger of being shut down due to the antics and incompetence of the group of troopers working there. These men of the law are so out of control it could end in nothing but hilarity. The movie follows these troopers as they try to save their station house and screw up again and again. Chances are if a movie has been made by the boys of Broken Lizard then it's sure to be a good one.

Pineapple Express

It's hard to recommend a comedy without a dozen token "stoner" movies coming to mind. Cheech and Chong, Half Baked, How High. Recently a movie came out that had all of the stuff you expect to see in a stoner movie and more. That movie is Pineapple express starring Seth Rogen and James Franco. Pineapple express is the story of two friends that are being hunted down by some crazy drug dealers. Watch them go on the run and have mishap after hilarious mishap. Just the simple fact that one of the characters spent the whole movie running around town in his pajamas tells you how simple yet utterly funny a stoner movie can be.

The Pink Panther

If your looking for a movie for the family, then try picking up The Pink Panther with Steve Martin. I watched this movie with my seven-year-old son and neither of us could stop laughing. The Pink Panther is about a police inspector who can't seem to keep himself out of trouble, but somehow manages to do his job through a series of silly mishaps and lucky coincidences. Don't be afraid to sit the whole family down for this one. Adults and children alike are sure to enjoy this film.
