Poetry: Hitchhiking

by Dolores Moore

Created on: April 07, 2009

Standing by the roadside, noon sun hot and high.
Backpack at your feet as the cars stream by.
Sending puffs of dust up, choking you with fumes.
Thumb out, hopes up, maybe get a ride soon.

Drinking from your Coke can, nibbling on a roll.
Shoes looking worn now, walking's took its toll.
Bending, doing stretches, keeping on your smile,
Somebody will surely stop and take you on some miles.

Hoping that those little clouds do not intend to rain.
Arms getting browner, face freckling up again.
Searching in your backpack for the suncream that you packed.
Pull it out, rub it on, the sun has burnt your neck.

Screeching brakes before you, then reversing to your spot,
Comes an old black pick-up, old couple, dog, the lot!
Opening up the door for you, cheerful, welcome smiles,
"Come on get in, we'll take you, let's cover us some miles!"

Thanking them profusely, giving the dog a pat.
Open window cools you, you all enjoy the chat.
Singing to the radio, exchanging views on life.
Hopes high, miles fly, you'll be back home tonight.
