Balance in our lives is virtually impossible to achieve. There are forces that are beyond our control that pull and push us in different directions all the time. Humans beings are at their best, the most creative and productive when they are constantly in this state of uncertainty. The trick to a healthy and happier life is to accept change and pressures as part of what it means to be human. The human animal is the only creature on Earth that is aware of its own mortality. We are aware that someday we will all die and knowing the certainty of our death we must perform or accomplish certain tasks before our time comes.
The tasks that give as the balance as we live our lives waiting for the designated hour of our end might be as simple as meeting the needs of our families. It might be that we feel that we must leave some work of art for generations to know our thoughts and feelings. Or it might mean that we have to create wealth and power either through business or politics to pass onto the next generation.
The balance that we achieve in our lives is how to best meet our personal goals, making productive use of our personal and professional time. Truly happy people are the ones that are able to find that balance and they work through their lives to the ultimate conclusion. We cannot take it with us, so it is what we leave behind that matters. It is amazing that individuals that create great companies and great wealth keep on working even though they have more than enough to meet their needs and the needs of their children. It is their strong desire for legacy that drives them on.
Unfortunately, there are too many individuals that are not able to find that greater purpose and they flounder in our prison systems, contributing nothing to society or themselves. It is unlikely that these individuals will ever achieve a balance of family and productivity.
Balance in our lives then is how we deal with spiritual, family, business or creative activities that ultimately allows us to pass on, knowing that we have done all that we did the best we individually could with what we had, thus achieving balance. Balance is the giving of time in our day so that each of our goals in each area can be met. We have the desire that our children be strong and have a feeling of being loved. If this is a goal then we must give time so that the goal can be met. If we wish to study, paint or write then we need to give time to those activities while ensuring that other areas don't suffer.
We do need to get away from the idea of the disposable society. When family or some other aspect of our lives is not working quite right, we just throw it aside and start over. We have to be manipulators of our time and energy so that we can reach our goals and having enough in reserve that we can call on that energy in case of emergencies.
