If you are a fan of Johnny Cash you will love the movie. Joaquin Phoenix does a bang up job in convincing you that he IS Johnny. When the movie starts he seems timid, unsure of himself and unable to sing. But, by the time the movie is over you start to see Phoenix when you think "Johnny Cash". This is a sure sign that the actor has done his homework and applied his talents correctly.
The rest of the cast is fabulous and I know that Reece Witherspoon, playing June Carter recieved an Academy Award, but it is Phoenix who does the important part with intelligence and vigor.
The movie is also instructive as it defines success in the true manner. You will see a rich and famous entertainer near self destruction. He then turns his life around by understanding what makes life tick. It's not fame or money but personal relationships and coming to grips with a father he never understood.
This may seem to be your usual star goes nuts, star recovers movie but I assure you it is not. It goes much deeper than that.
As an aside, I strongly suggest to purchase the last album that Johnny Cash recorded. Entitled, American V A Hundred Highways, it is absolutely stunning.
