Earth Day was something that was never acknowledged in my home. I didn't even know it existed until I heard kids talking about it at my middle school. As an adult I pay more attention to this particular holiday. I don't really enjoy camping or hiking, but I love animals and Earth Day is all about celebrating and appreciating nature. The activity ideas I have are based on that and most of these activities would be better for a group of children.
1. Planting a tree or flowers. Depending on what you're planting and whether you have it already this can take less than an hour or half a day. For children I would recommend letting them choose their favorite flower to plant. They could also be given the option of small, young trees. Trees or plants that are too big for a child to plant on their own would make the activity a watching event rather than a hands-on or learning event and won't have as much of an impact.
2. Games involving nature. A game of charades focusing on animals can be an opportunity for children to share and act out what they know about their favorite animals. Children could also play twenty questions using plants. It's a fun way for kids to learn about new plants and also have the opportunity to share what they know about various plants.
3. Animal art contest. The kids could have an art contest, the only rule being that it has to ba about nature, no houses or cars. When everyone's done, either a judge could determine the winner or the children can vote on their favorite. It may be a good idea to have candy or some kind of prize for all the children so no one feels left out. Then the children can express themselves during the activity without feeling they have to prove anything or be better than anyone else.
4. Nature stories. Children love telling stories about things they do, especially when they know people are listening. Have them tell stories about interactions with animals or camping or other outdoor activities. If the children are too shy or can't think of anything to talk about, have a book ready to read to them that's about animals or plants.
5. Camp out! You don't have to go anywhere. It can be in your backyard or even in your living room. After you've set up a tent or something similar, talk about what animals use for shelter. While you're roasting marshmallows or passing around a bag of chips you could talk about what different animals eat. It may also be a good time to talk about safety tips related to camping and outdoor activities. Don't make it overwhelming by giving too much information or focusing on dangerous things, but make sure they know the basics of staying safe.
These activities and the ideas you come up with on your own can make Earth Day an all-day celebration for you, your children, and their friends. Have fun!
