A worker bee returns to the hive and through a dance, communicates to the fellow worker bees where they might find pollen to make honey, even miles away. The hive is organized in an extremely complex social order, complete with a queen. The worker bees wait on the queen and provide for her every need. All of this occurs with insects whose brains are smaller than the period at the end of this sentence.
Geese migrate thousands of miles in a cooperative way that rotates leaders to allow them rest. A goose who needs care has escorts on both wings to make sure that he or she makes the distance. Both parents of goslings guard them, teaching them how to fly and swim, and providing food for them. Wandering too close to the goslings will result in anger and being chased away and discovering just how vicious geese can be.
Butterflies, hatched from cocoons, also migrate to the same place, year after year, again with a minimal brain.
How does this happen? Is it pure coincidence? Can this happen because of chance? The obvious answer is no, it is the work of a Creator, whose eternal design is seen in all of the creatures. The creatures have adapted over the million of years that they have inhabited the earth. Humans have domesticated wolves and small felines to turn them into house pets. Subsequent generations of dogs and cats do not have to be tamed. They have adapted to their domestic lives because they have "learned" that by being friendly with humans they can survive and thrive.
Humans have adapted over the eons from the gatherers/hunters to a society where an article can be written on a complex binary calculator to be shared with readers around the world. No other specie has the ability to communicate the way that homo-sapiens are able to do, in a multitude of languages. Humans have made their lives more convenient because of their superior brains, which have increased over the ages. Humans also realize that this is due to a loving Creator, who has made himself known in the coming of the Son of God.
Charles Darwin did not invent evolution, he only discovered the work of the Creator. Contrary to some Christians, Darwin was not anti-Christian. He was raised and schooled in the Anglican Church. And since God created Darwin as well as all humans, the obvious answer is that Darwin and Christianity can and do co-exist.
Psalm 8 states it well: When (we) look at the heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have established, what are mortals that you are mindful of them? And the sons (and daughters) of mortals that you care for them? (paraphrased Revised Standard Version). Humans indeed have a unique place in creation to be those who tend the earth and provide for the welfare of all creatures. In a practical sense, humans can reverse some of the results of their abuse of earth, reverse survival of the fittest, as they work for the continued existence of animals who are close to extinction. Science is a discovery of the creation, even if some discoveries have not furthered life.
Of all the passages in the Bible, this most succinctly and beautifully expresses humans' place on earth and in creation. It seems impossible that this all happened because of chance, or that all animals (including humans) have not evolved over the millions of years that they have walked, flown, crawled on earth and swam in the rivers, lakes and oceans.
The creation sings the wonders of its Creator, proclaims loudly that the Creator has left a written record as well as a record in the rocks, creatures and in all of nature. Even though, it is a mystery how the world and the universe were created, we can proclaim, "O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!"
