Understanding the intelligence of cats

by Kathy Panicola

Created on: April 06, 2009

I bet my cat is more intelligent than most husbands, thats right I said most husbands. Can most husbands get what they want, and not say a word? I also ask, can most husbands sense when their wives are feeling blue?

My cat can. He knows (through training) that he's not to go outside without someone with him, so how does he communicate this want, this need, simply by standing by the back door looking at it, and looking at you, back and forth until you comply with his wish to open the door, he however will wait for whoever opens the door to go out first.(not only intelligent, but polite) If he wants you to follow him into another room, he simply walks into the room your in, jumps on your lap, jumps off, and repeats this ritual until you get up and follow him. Constantly looking over his shoulder making sure you are in pursuit. If he wants water he either sits in front of his bowl or waits until you go to the bathroom and sits on the sink. If you go to the bathroom, or any room for that matter, and don't let him in, he will take his paw and knock at the door. When I leave my home to go to work, or run some errands, my cat sits in the window and raises his paw, letting me know he'll miss me. But most importantly when I am feeling blue, and my husband hasn't a clue, its my cat that you can count on. To sense that something is wrong, without a word said he can put a smile on my face. He will kiss me, whether on the tip of my nose, (his favorite place) cheek, neck, or ear, he will wrestle with me until I let him get his Kissie. He hugs too, and always at the right time just when I need one, he takes both his paws puts them around my neck and squeezes. So, is he smarter than most husbands? How many of you have needed a hug or a kiss just because? And your husbands just sat there watching TV, without the intelligence to sense, that you need a quick squeeze, or a little kiss? Thank goodness, for the cat in your life.

Some of what my cat does, he has been trained to do, but most of what he does is because he has intelligence. Let's face it, just the fact that he can be trained shows he has more intelligent then most husbands. It took me a few days to teach my cat a few things, I'm married to my husband for over nineteen years, and after all these years, he still hasn't learned to put the toilet seat down. Through the years there have been many of times, that I was feeling blue, my husband never sensed anything was wrong. No hugs, no kisses, so who's smarter? The husband, or the cat? My vote is for the CAT.
