I saw a girl on the edge of the road,
She smiled and nodded, used the universal code.
And as she faded into a small dot,
I regretted not stopping, so thought "why not?"
Thinking that she would be glad of a ride,
I retraced my route, but she'd gone from the side,
And I thought, "shame she hadn't gone with me!"
I could have used a little company.
Later that night I turned on the wireless,
And the news that I heard made me sick I confess.
The smiling young lady had taken her ride,
But on that same journey a poor girl had died.
Murdered, throat slashed, left in a heap.
The details I heard made me shudder and weep
I had probably driven back past her that night,
But since it was dark had been hidden from sight.
The story transpired that the girl hitching rides,
Was really a fiend in wolf's clothing, I sighed,
If I had stopped and said kindly "why don't you hop in?"
I would have invited the devil to me with a grin.
Don't take things for granted, you can never be sure,
When inviting a stranger to enter your car,
Be careful when stopping, be there with a friend,
Don't chance things alone, or it may be your end!
