Encouraging others is a wonderful way to encourage yourself and possibly prevent depression. Choosing to focus on those around you within family, friends and strangers is always a positive way to have a great attitude.
Encouragement begins in very simple ways such as, "You look nice today", or "that's a great outfit", and so on. Being a good listener is another way to help folks understand there is someone that will stop what they are doing for a few minutes, and let them vent.
I know to well the results of depression and withdrawing from others, it can be very lonely. Putting forth the extra effort when you are feeling down or blue will benefit you in many ways as well as others.
If you are a Christian you know the Bible and prayer are great ways to find encouragement, and learn how to lift others up to feeling better about themselves.
The Bible story of David encouraged himself in the Lord while being hunted by King Saul, who wanted him dead. By keeping himself positive and aware that God was on his side he was able to eventually become King of Israel.
Sometimes laughing and being a friendly person is contagious, and will infect those who come in contact with you. Don't be afraid to be yourself and step out and be a friend to a stranger.
I enjoy speaking to folks all during the day, and when you put a smile with any word it becomes complimentary. I am a congenial person and don't understand why some people are so negative, but then I realize these are the ones I need to encourage.
There are times when being quiet and respectful is another way to encourage myself and others. Thinking and meditating on what I've been through and I am a survivor, and perhaps sharing a personal experience not only reminds you of past victories, but encourages someone else to be strong and press on.
Encouraging others can be a way of life for some always searching for someone who appears to be sad and needing a kind word or a helping hand.
It's one thing to speak kindly but many times folks need much more such as, helping with finances, food, and child care. How many women are suffering from never having any personal time to relax in a hot bath? Who do you know needs someone to help out with errands or a sitter for the children?
We all know someone who needs something we have, which is time. Unfortunately we seem to get caught up in having enough time to do all we think we need to do. What if we slow down and take care of ourselves and then we might think about those around us who are struggling.
A wise quote to remember, "Love your neighbor as youself".
