Photographing your baby

Photographing your baby (or young toddler) can either be a fun experience, or it can leave either (or both) of you in tears. There are two main types of photographs. First, there is the candid type, and then there is the formal type. Both types of pictures can be taken by a parent. Here are some tips.

Candid:

This type of photograph is the relaxed kind. Digital cameras have made this type of baby photographing very simple. You can take as many pictures as you like, without having to worry about film costs. Photographing babies is a bit like photographing a whirlwind, but if you dedicate yourself to taking a large number of photographs, rather than overly concerning yourself with getting the "perfect" shot, you will end up with some really wonderful pictures that you could have never planned for. Babies and young children are joys to be around because of their spontaneity and zest for life. You can capture this on camera as long as you do not try too hard. Over thinking this type of photograph tends to make for uninteresting pictures. Be carefree, have fun, and shoot a bunch of shots.

Do be sure to try a variety of different settings with this type of photograph. It helps to have a camera that is small and portable enough to be carried on each outing. These days, digital cameras are certainly small enough to be carried in a diaper bag, purse or pocket. You never know when something cute will happen. It's best to be always prepared. Pictures of children covered in food from trying to feed themselves, bath time, beach visits and trips to the zoo are all very common types of candid photographs. Feel free to take pictures of these things, but do not feel limited. Pictures of your child doing nearly anything will eventually be interesting to you. It may seem boring to photograph the details of daily life, but one day soon, your child will be grown up. It is amazing how interesting the most mundane pictures will be to you and your child once the child is old enough to want to know what he or she was like as a baby.

Formal:

This is the type of picture that people typically take their children to a photographer for. Taking your child to get his or her pictures taken can be a good idea, but it doesn't always guarantee that you will get good results. Most of the places that do this type of photography are expensive, and they also tend to have pretty rigid ways of going about their work. You and your child may feel rushed, as paid photographers do not generally have an endless
