Encompassing 900 years of history within its walls, The Tower of London is the home of the Crown Jewels, and apparently, the spirits of the countless souls who were executed and imprisoned there in the past. Built by William the Conqueror in the early 1080s, the Tower now spans over 18 acres, as the direct result of the addition of a number of extensions throughout the course of many years. Today, the Tower of London is a World Heritage site, and it attracts an astonishing two million visitors per year.
It cannot be denied that visitors flock to the Tower of London to discover its historical and architectural significance. However, another large draw seems to be the ghost stories and legends surrounding it. Countless tales abound regarding hauntings within the Tower and its grounds. History shows that the Tower of London was the site of many deaths, as well as the extreme torture of innumerable prisoners. Those who believe in ghosts and hauntings claim that these victims of violent and untimely deaths remain at this, the location of their demise, because they are unable to be set free and rest in peace. Long considered one of the most haunted places in Britain, the list of the spirits that haunt the Tower includes a number of important historical figures, such as Anne Boleyn, Thomas Becket, Sir Walter Raleigh, and King Henry VI, among others. Today, some visitors to the Tower of London claim to experience ghostly encounters, while others report significant feelings of the aura of death during a tour of the attraction. Another fascinating bit of folklore surrounding the tower is that of the ravens. Legend states that if the six ravens who reside there ever depart, then the tower will surely fall. The belief in this particular legend runs so deep that a seventh raven is kept at the Tower as a spare. Also, each of the ravens have one wing clipped in order to ensure that they remain on the grounds.
The number of attractions and activities at the Tower of London is extensive. Guided Yeoman tours, the Medieval Palace, the White Tower, and the many exhibitions are all typically included in the price of the admission ticket. The Tower of London is also very family-friendly. Children will delight in the various activities aimed specifically at them, such as spotting the ravens, and the adventurous family trails. In short, the Tower provides the perfect venue for the education and enjoyment of children of all ages.
Food, drink, and shopping are all readily available at the Tower of London. A wide variety gifts, toys, clothing, and even gems inspired by the Crown Jewels adorn all of the shops. The restaurants and cafes on the Tower grounds offer something for every taste and budget. Many of the cafes have take-away options, and a picnic on the grounds is suggested and encouraged for a truly unique experience.
A visit to the Tower of London is essential when traveling to the magnificent city of London, England. The Tower presents its guests with a rich cultural and historical journey, and an unforgettable adventure back in time.
