Poetry: Don't pity me

by Vai Helmer

Created on: April 06, 2009

Pity? Whats pity when envy sets in?

Its just a word passed between apes,

Wide grins swallowing the poor

A couple of pennies, maybe a dime

Nothing more, no thoughts

Bitterness? Am I old now?

What's bitterness when all is lost

Yet nothing is earned?

Money is nothing and pleasure is fleeting

Smiling up at the sky from the grave

Am I shackled to this pit?

By my own will?

Possibly.

More likely the blame lies with the fates

Don't pity me, pity god

Pity the monster who showed me happiness

So that I could know of its absence

Envy me

Then perhaps this hunger will die

And I

With it
