Call centers are a prime example of the worst companies to work for. Majority of companies work the same way, but these are examples of why they are the worst.
Many centers employ anywhere from 20 people to 2000 people. The smaller centers usually don't have the turn over rates or attrition that you see in the larger companies, but it's still there and a perfect pattern of the worst companies to work for. The main reasons behind dismal employees are as follows; no job assurance, no consistent staff reward system, unfair career development, low morale and constant push on making the bosses happy rather than the employee.
Job assurance means being given what you are told, and have the protection of not losing your job. When hired, you're promised so many things whether it be schedule, rate of pay, or the type of atmosphere you'll be provided. What they don't tell you is that, this is only dependent on what the company needs, if they have room for you. Great example of no job assurance, not giving what they promised.
Call centers usually provide one time staff rewards, to punch up their statistics, to make employees work harder, and provide more of what they are asking for. The problem with this system, is it's usually an award given as a one time thing, ranging from a pen or maybe even a car. The smaller the reward, the less the employee feels appreciated. The larger the award, usually means only 1 person is going to win. A constant reward system allowing everyone feel appreciated would be the logical sense, but most companies do not offer these.
Unfair career development happens all the time, because there are so many people working in one place, there usually is someone more skilled or liked than you. Call centers usually don't look at the work you have done or watch to see you do it. They usually base it on your previous experience and how well you impressed them at your interview, which in most cases is someone who can talk the talk, and walk the walk.
The constant push from employers to improve their production comes with low morale. Employers are more engrossed with production and money than what they can do for their employees. Employees want to be recognized, but employers want their company to be recognized more.
Companies that are the worst, are companies that provide all of the above, and probably more, if they improved these they'd have happy employees and be quite successful in what they sell.
