Poetry: Hitchhiking

Do you know how it is,

when you get older,

sometimes the vision fades a little.

So it was for Donna,

She said she saw this hitchhiker on the road.

You know, complete with the thumb up

and a sign saying that he wanted to go to Boston.

Boston, yes Boston...

She told me,

"I saw that hitchhiker, it seems like, a long time ago.

It seems like most pedestrians I see on the road nowdays

just hold up handmade signs made out of cardboard boxes

saying they want to work for food,

which usually means they want a handout

and as I don't have a hand out left to give them,

I usually don't pay them much mind.

This man was not one of these.

His sign was handmade on white paper,

It said, clear as day, "Wanted a ride to Boston."

He looked sharp in his light blue jeans

and light blue jean jacket.

His blond hair blew in the breeze.

He smiled as he saw me in my Toyota Corrolla.

It was as if he knew me.

Yet, I had not clue who he was,

though he looked vaguely familiar.

Then, as I got closer to him.

I saw who it was,

my nephew returned home

from abroad, now grown

and needing a place to stay.

It was the strangest thing."

Long story made short...

Donna picked up that hitchhiker

and he still is living at her house.

And, no, he never made it to Boston.

He decided that

he would rather stay in California.
