VOICES IN STONE CITIES

I have taken handfuls of sand
from countless cities abandoned
long before I could walk. I filled
my lungs with air that rushed and swirled

As it did in time now distant.
Stone on top of stone, defiant
of earth's drag, they stand. Now shadows,
legends of lost grandeur, echoes.

I can only imagine lives
with burdens akin to my strife.
Higher powers crushed their poor bones
to dust. How different are my own?

We are but fragments, perhaps dust.
Who built these cities of stone? Us!
