Poetry is many different things to many different people and all those people would probably define it a different way. To me, poetry is a way to open one's heart and soul and pour out feelings and emotions that you may not be able to express otherwise. Poetry resides inside one's soul and lets the audience have a sneak peek into a window within. You can put a piece of paper in front of you and open up and begin to write and that paper can't judge you or criticize you. Poetry becomes a form or therapy for a lot of poets.
There are so many different kinds of poetry such as, haiku, limerick, sonnet, ballad. No ONE of these is the definition of poetry. Poems can either rhyme or not rhyme. It's all up to the poet. To a lot of poets, including myself, you can have a bad day, or feel really sad, or even feel really happy; you can pull out a piece of paper and begin to write down your thoughts and suddenly things are easier to cope with again and you can share your happiness with someone else.
It's important, I believe for poets to keep a journal or notebook of their writings because, even if they never share any with anyone else, they can come back to them and often have reprieve over and over again from the same piece of work.
