A new coat of paint for your house won't just spruce it up but also improve the value. If you are a do-it-yourself person this is a job for you. Clean the surface, scrap with a wire brush, apply a primer, and paint. You can choose from flat, satin or gloss finishes. Be sure to buy a good brush and cleaner if you are going to use oil house paint. If latex (water base paint) use soap and water.
From an artistic point of view use a color you like but keep in mind the houses around you. If everyone's house is white and you paint a wild blue it will stand out like a sore thumb. It would also hurt the value of your home and the others in the neigborhood. Don't forget you can use landscaping, fences, trim (such as shutters and window color) to add more depth and design for a more personal look.
If you hire a painter to do the job be sure to get references. Also check what material he is using such as brand of paint. Have this written down on his estimate so you won't forget.
The job well done is worth the effort and the outcome will feel like a brand new house.
